Celebrating 45 Years of Dedication: Paul O’Callaghan’s Journey with Airspace Solutions

At Airspace Solutions, we believe that great companies are built by great people — and few people embody that more than Paul O’Callaghan, who is celebrating an incredible 45 years with the business.

From the early days of simple inflatable designs to today’s highly advanced, computer-designed structures, Paul has been there through it all. His story is not just one of loyalty, but of passion, craftsmanship, and a deep understanding of an industry that has transformed dramatically over the decades.

Paul O’Callaghan, Airspace

I started as a welder. Everything was very basic then – tubes, octagons, simple bouncers for leisure centres. They were sealed welded units, nothing like the complex inflatables we create today.

Having previously worked as a sailmaker making hang gliders, Paul found himself looking for work after losing his job. A family connection led him to Airspace Solutions, where he initially joined for what he thought would be a part-time role.

Forty-five years later, he is still here.

A Passion for the Craft

When asked what has kept him at Airspace Solutions for so long, Paul’s answer is simple: passion.

“I think it was more a passion than anything really,” he says. “I was amazed by it all in the beginning. I always wanted to see everything inflated — to stand back and think, ‘Yeah, I built that.’”

That pride in creating something from raw materials — and seeing it become a product that brings joy to families, children, and leisure centres across the country — has never left him.

Evolving with the Industry

As the company grew, so did the complexity of its products.

In the early days, inflatables were hand-drawn, hand-cut, hand-painted, and manually welded. Today, designs are created using advanced computer software, sent directly to cutting machines, and digitally printed with precision.

Paul was also part of the transition from welding to sewing.

The welding became too heavy physically, so we started looking at sewing. Then we realised even that needed adapting because the material was too heavy to move through the machine. That’s when we started putting the machines on rollers and changing how we worked.

This hands-on innovation helped shape the manufacturing processes still used today.

A Career Filled with Remarkable Projects

Over the years, Paul has worked on some unforgettable projects.

Among the highlights were inflatable models of airships created for the James Bond film A View to a Kill, as well as large white inflatable stage towers for Duran Duran.

He also worked on inflatables for the classic TV show It’s a Knockout, and even created inflatable furniture for a Disney attraction called Goofy’s House, including inflatable lamps, sofas, and fireplaces designed to look like cartoon interiors.

More recently, he has worked on promotional inflatable structures for brands like Monster Energy and continues to help produce the company’s hugely popular Aqua Runs.

More Than Just Manufacturing

Today, Paul works as a machinist, but his role goes far beyond simply sewing.

Every new inflatable requires problem-solving, experience, and instinct.

“When something comes downstairs from design, I might be seeing it for the first time,” he says. “You have to work out how it’s going to go together, where the weak points will be, and how to strengthen it. You have to think for yourself.”

That knowledge — built over four decades — is invaluable.

It is also one of the biggest challenges facing the business today: passing that expertise on to the next generation.

“You can’t teach 40 years of knowledge in a week,” Paul says. “Sometimes you might not need that knowledge for five years, but when you do, it matters.”

His Proudest Achievement

When asked what he is proudest of, Paul doesn’t point to one single project.

Instead, his answer reflects his commitment to the company itself.

“Keeping it going,” he says. “That’s my proudest achievement. It hasn’t always been easy. Markets change, situations change — you have to adapt and fight to keep it going.”

That resilience helped Airspace Solutions continue through industry shifts, economic challenges, and changing times.

Looking to the Future

Paul believes Airspace Solutions has remained strong because of its commitment to quality and innovation.

“We’ve adapted well,” he says. “We maintain quality, and I believe we’re still leaders in design. We tend to be copied.”

From leisure centres and holiday parks to water-based attractions and large-scale inflatables, the business has grown into a diverse and respected manufacturer with a reputation built on trust.

And for Paul, customer loyalty says it all.

“If people keep coming back to us, we must be doing something right.”

Thank You, Paul

Forty-five years of service is an extraordinary achievement.

Paul’s dedication, skill, and passion have helped shape Airspace Solutions into the company it is today. His knowledge has supported generations of products, customers, and colleagues – and his story is a reminder that behind every great business are the people who keep it moving forward.

From everyone at Airspace Solutions: thank you, Paul, for 45 years of commitment, craftsmanship, and loyalty.
