Why Airspace Solutions’ Atlantis Inflatable was the right choice for Birtley Community Pool

Birtley Community Aquatic Centre (BCAC), a charitable trust dedicated to revitalising its local pool, faced a significant challenge when it took over the Birtley Swim Centre. After the facility was closed in July 2023 (due to rising energy and operational costs) the community rallied together to save it. Volunteers, local businesses and tradespeople contributed time, funds and resources allowing the pool to reopen as a not-for-profit venture. Since reopening the centre has become a hub of activity attracting over 16,000 visitors each month, including 6,500 children.

One standout feature of this successful transformation has been the addition of Airspace Solutions’ Atlantis swimming pool inflatable, a versatile and energy-efficient investment that has significantly boosted the pool’s appeal and profitability. We spoke with Lewis Herbertson Senior Operations Manager at BCAC about how the Atlantis inflatable has supported their business goals.

A Game-Changer for Community Pools

“Being a new charitable trust it was vital that the swimming pool inflatable we purchased for the centre would generate attendances, income, be energy efficient and come from a company with an exemplary health and safety record,” Herbertson shared.

After researching the market BCAC found that the Atlantis system by Airspace Solutions outshone its competitors. “There are lots of options on the market; however none equalled the Atlantis in terms of its versatility and what it could deliver for our valued customers and members” he explained.

The modular design of the Atlantis allows the team to adapt to customer needs seamlessly. “The Atlantis individual modules can be moved around to suit the programming; we can deliver exactly what the customer needs. The added benefit of the Atlantis system is that you can buy extra units as you want, based on how your programme develops,” said Herbertson.

This flexibility is critical for BCAC’s evolving offerings, including swimming sessions and the upcoming launch of children’s parties in the New Year, where bookings are already exceeding expectations.

Energy Efficiency and Sustainability

In today’s cost-conscious and environmentally aware world, the Atlantis inflatable is a smart choice. Its sealed unit design ensures energy efficiency. “Once the units have been blown up they support the whole session without requiring extra energy. Given the high programming usage, it was critical we were not creating extra demands on energy usage,” Herbertson noted.

This feature aligns perfectly with BCAC’s mission to manage operational costs while promoting accessibility to all.

Industry-Leading Support

Airspace Solutions stood out not only for their innovative product but also for their comprehensive support. From the start their industry expertise played a crucial role in helping BCAC establish safe operating systems, efficient storage solutions and best practices for maintenance.

“John Wilkes [Airspace Solutions Manager] supported us with advice on our safe operating systems, storage and cleaning,” Herbertson said. “The ongoing support from Airspace Solutions wasn’t just for the installation part of the project; the team has stayed in touch and are always available for advice and good practice.”

John Wilkes reflected on the partnership adding “It has been a huge privilege to be part of getting local people swimming again at this fantastic community pool.”

Transforming Lives

The reopening of Birtley Community Pool represents more than just a return to swimming; it’s a beacon of community spirit and resilience. The presence of the Atlantis inflatable has elevated the centre’s offerings, drawing in families, school programmes and new members.

The importance of this achievement was underscored when His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales officially opened the centre in October 2023 marking a proud moment for the local community and everyone involved in the project.
